Flowing Wells fell 12-1 to No. 2 seed Scottsdale Desert Mountain on Tuesday in the second round of the Class 5A-II state tournament at Papago Baseball Park in Phoenix.
The seventh-seeded Caballeros (16-12) had only one extra-base hit, a double from freshman Marc Gavre in the mercy-rule loss.
"Desert Mountain was very good," coach David Landrith said. "They were just overpowering with 14 hits in four innings with five extra-base hits.
"We didn't play badly. They were just outstanding."
Flowing Wells will move into the losers bracket of the double-elimination tournament. The Cabs face No. 14 Tolleson on Thursday at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix.
● Gilbert Mesquite 7, Tucson 2: At Cherry Field, Tucson saw its season end with a home loss Tuesday at the hands of the 15th-seeded Wildcats in the 5A-I state playoffs.
The No. 10 Badgers (18-9) committed five errors in the elimination game and had only one extra-base hit, a double by senior Chris Moon.
"I'm really proud of the kids, having won our region (the 5A Southern)," coach Oscar Romero said. "At times you get hot. We were hot. It's just unfortunate that sometimes you hope to get on a good run at the end but don't. Unfortunately, we just didn't hit that stride."
● Paradise Valley 14, Sunnyside 12: At Sunnyside, the host and 10th-seeded Blue Devils were eliminated from postseason play.
