The seventh-seeded Flowing Wells baseball team earned a 13-11 Class 5A-II state playoff win over Sunnyside on Saturday in an abbreviated game.
The first-round game at Flowing Wells (16-11) was called after the sixth inning because of rain.
"Rules are rules, and we knew it was an official game after the fifth inning," Sunnyside coach Ernie Palomarez said.
The Caballeros took a 3-2 lead in the first inning behind consecutive hits, starting with Billy Canizales, who went 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Marc Gavre of Flowing Wells prevented what appeared to be a two-run single in the second with a jumping snag of Stefen Romero's line drive.
Gavre threw to second for the double play to end the threat.
But Sunnyside (14-14), the 10th seed, scored three in the inning to take a 5-3 lead.
Alan Beltran paced the Blue Devils with three hits, including a solo home run in the fifth inning.
Sunnyside's leadoff man, Isaiah Catalan, began the sixth with a single. His teammates followed his lead as the Blue Devils scored five runs with no outs.
Flowing Wells will play Desert Mountain on Tuesday at Papago Baseball Park in Phoenix at 4 p.m.
Sunnyside will host No. 15 Paradise Valley at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
● Glendale Mountain Ridge 4, Tucson 2: At Tucson, the 10th-seeded Badgers (18-8) managed two runs and three hits against No. 7 Mountain Ridge (23-7) in a 5A-I state tournament game.
Badgers pitcher Marc Damon went the full seven innings, allowing six hits.
"They crushed us early and we didn't execute," Tucson coach Oscar Romero said. "Marc pitched a great game after he settled down, after the first two innings, but we need our bats to wake up."
Tucson will host Glendale Mesquite on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
4A regional games
● Sonoran: Ironwood Ridge 14, Rincon 4 (6 innings): At Kino Sports Complex, Ironwood Ridge coach Nick Allen looked for a way to jump-start his lineup.
After scoring nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Nighthawks a mercy-rule win over Rincon/University (6-22) in the first round of regionals, Allen said he found what he was seeking.
"We needed a spark offensively, and we finally got one," said Allen. "That inning, everyone seemed to be locked in."
The win also locked up a spot for Ironwood Ridge (16-12) in the 4A-I state playoffs.
Junior outfielder Caleb Wenzel — batting in the No. 9 spot for Ironwood Ridge — finished the game with three hits, falling a home run shy of the cycle.
Ironwood Ridge will play Canyon del Oro on Monday at 4 p.m. at Kino.
● Kino: Sahuaro 11, Nogales 1 (6 innings): At Kino Sports Complex, Cougars ace Pat McCoy yielded one run and six hits over six innings, and added a three-run home run as Sahuaro locked up a state tournament berth.
"I had it going the way I wanted with my location," McCoy said.
Sahuaro (14-11) gained some revenge after being crushed by the Apaches (19-12) in the teams' previous two meetings during the regular season.
"It's been an up-and-down season," said Sahuaro coach Mark Chandler. "But we're starting to put it all together."
Sahuaro will play Catalina Foothills at 4 p.m. Monday at Kino.
● Gila: Desert View 7, Palo Verde 6 (8 innings): At Kino Sports Complex, Desert View's Nico Rosthenhausler walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth to give the Jaguars a slot in the 4A-II state playoffs.
"We did what we needed to make sure we got this one," said Desert View coach Bill Godbout. "Now we can concentrate on winning this (tournament) and upping our state seed."
Desert View (11-11) will take on Santa Rita (14-9) on Monday at 4 p.m. at Kino.
