Second-seeded Sunnyside easily moves to second round ARIZONA DAILY STAR
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 04.29.2007
Second-seeded Sunnyside advanced to the second round of the Class 5A-II state softball tournament after routing No. 15 Anthem Boulder Creek 10-0 in five innings on Saturday at Sunnyside.
"We had timely hitting and great defense today," said Sunnyside coach Peter Palomarez. "Pitching went well. Hitting went well. They just played a really good game today."
The Blue Devils (28-4) went right to work in the first inning when senior Kaleigh Gates hit a three-run homer to left field.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, it was Gates again who stepped into the box with the bases loaded and two outs.
But with Sunnyside already holding a 9-0 lead, Gates slapped a game-ending single to left field to trigger the mercy rule.
"I felt really comfortable and confident in the box," Gates said after going 4 for 4 with with four RBIs. "I was really relaxed, so it was see the ball, hit the ball."
Sunnyside pitcher Ivy Campas complemented the efficient Blue Devils hitting by throwing a complete game shutout.
Campas rarely found herself in trouble while striking out nine Jaguars (11-17). She also came through at the plate with a two-run single in the bottom of the third to extend Sunnyside's lead to 5-0.
"I wasn't exactly on my 'A' game, but I have a great defense behind me and everything went well," Campas said. "I pitch well because I have a lot of confidence in my team.
"We have great defense and a great offense, so I know they will back me up."
Sunnyside will take on visiting Flowing Wells at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
● Glendale O'Connor 12, Mountain View 0: At O'Connor, Mountain View (11-20) played without seven players because of the school's prom.
The No. 14 Mountain Lions' makeshift lineup produced only two hits in the first-round loss to third-seeded O'Connor (26-6) in the 5A-II softball state tournament.
Mountain View coach Frank Drake had to use four junior varsity players just to field a team.
"We didn't hit the ball at all. You can't win with two hits," Drake said. "We didn't have most of our players, so that hurt us."
● Flowing Wells 9, Peoria 5: At Peoria, Flowing Wells had 12 hits, including three doubles and a triple, in a 5A-II state tournament upset over the No. 7 Panthers (25-6).
The Caballeros (12-14) were aided by the bottom of their lineup, which has struggled throughout the season.
"We're improved significantly at the plate," Flowing Wells coach George Corona said. "We don't have a dominating pitcher, so if we can hit like we hit today, we can do it."
● The Salpointe Catholic-Chandler Basha 5A-I game in Tucson was postponed Saturday because of rain. It has been rescheduled for 4 p.m. Monday.
