The Salpointe Catholic boys soccer team relied on a steady offense and a composed defense to advance past the first round of the Class 5A-I state playoffs with a 6-0 home victory over Chandler Basha on Tuesday.
The Lancers will play in Saturday's quarterfinals at the Tempe Sports Complex.
"We know that we have the weapons, in terms of our attacking play," Salpointe coach Wolfgang Weber said. "The key for us to be successful in state — as we move forward — is how well we defend."
Salpointe's offense took to the net in the 13th minute when Fernando Gauna's quick feet broke down the defense and found room to score the Lancers' first goal. Gauna finished with two goals and one assist.
Luis Lanz secured a 3-0 halftime lead for the Lancers with a burst past his defender at midfield, which he concluded with a goal.
"It felt good," Lanz said. "Just getting by him and finishing the goal."
Lanz and Gauna each registered goals in the second half.
Although Weber said his team had a five-minute lapse on defense in the first half, he is confident his squad will go deep into the state tournament.
"I think we are really hitting our stride," Weber said. "Tonight, we feel good about where we are."

Mountain View coach Bruce Hesse was pleased with his team's performance but felt it missed out on some opportunities.
