After goalie switch, Sabino blanks RinconArizona Daily Star
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 01.26.2006
Sabino coach Jon Pearlman gave Andrew Gentry the starting goalkeeper nod for Wednesday's game over Brian Perriman, one superb goalie in favor of another.
"Well, Gentry has a state championship under his belt," Pearlman said before the Class 4A Sonoran regional semifinal against host Rincon/University.
It made sense then, and even more so after second-seeded Sabino, last year's Class 4A state champion, stymied Rincon 3-0 to advance to Friday's tournament title match.
"In big games he has been great this year," Pearlman said of Gentry, who had six saves and started every game in goal during the Sabercats' state playoff run. "He's been there."
Poor execution in the first half — outside of forward Jordan Benson's inventive, defense-splitting goal at the 13th minute — drew Pearlman's ire. But a defensive authority directed by Phil Mota kept Rincon without much opportunity on offense.
"They are a tough team, much taller than we are, and they won probably 80 percent of the balls," said Rangers coach Roxanne Taylor. "I think we got a little flat in the second half."
Sabino (15-5), which will play No. 1 Canyon del Oro on Friday at 6 p.m. at Rincon in the title game, added goals in the second half by Casey Numetko and Charlie Sales for good measure.

● Salpointe Catholic 8, Tucson 0: At Salpointe, the Badgers could not find a way to stop Salpointe junior striker Fernando Gauna, who scored five goals and had one assist.
Gauna has 38 goals this season.
Salpointe's high-power offense ran by the Badgers' defense despite 10 offside calls and four fouls in the first half alone. Tucson's offense, led by senior striker Polo Villasenor, was repeatedly frustrated by a faster, stronger Lancer defense and was not able to convert any scoring opportunities.
The Lancers will play the winner of today's game between Mountain View and Sierra Vista Buena on Friday.
