If Justine Haynes-Mermis looked as if she had just spent 40 minutes diving in dirt, running from pillar to post and saving her team's season, it was because she did.
Haynes-Mermis, the Cienega girls soccer goalkeeper, was aided immensely by adept defenders as the host and fourth-seeded Bobcats preserved their halftime lead and beat Catalina 4-1 Tuesday in the 4A Kino Region tournament to secure a berth in next week's Class 4A-I state tournament.
"They wanted to win because it determined their (season's) continuation, but we were a little better," said Haynes-Mermis, who had 13 saves, many of them coming as No. 3 Catalina tried to rally from a 3-1 halftime deficit.
The Trojans, playing with a drastic sense of urgency in the second half, created numerous scoring opportunities directly in front of the goal in the final 40 minutes. But each time, Haynes-Mermis or her teammates thwarted the threats.
Elizabeth Field added a goal with three seconds remaining to cap the victory, giving coach Tom Balderrama a trip to the state playoffs in his inaugural season.
