There were more whirlwinds of dust and dead grass than there were goals, but the excitement of the final minutes of Catalina's 2-1 win over Amphitheater was prevalent even through the continual haze.
Late goals by Edwin Peña and David Valenzuela broke a scoreless tie and put the Trojans into next week's Class 4A-I state playoffs.
"This wind was a killer, but it actually helped our style of soccer," Trojans coach Larry Ruhf said. Amphi "has such a strong offense, we didn't want them to control the ball, and that's one thing we did take away."
Pena finally broke through in the 68th minute to give Catalina (10-8) a lead.
