Despite starting a lineup that consists of eight freshmen and sophomores, the Mountain View girls soccer team took a big step toward a successful season with a 1-0 win Monday over Sierra Vista Buena in the first round of the 5A Southern Regionals at Salpointe Catholic.
"They played like eight freshmen and sophomores on the varsity team," Mountain View coach Rick Ellis said. "There was a little inconsistency in the first half, (but) they relaxed after the first goal."
The Mountain Lions' only tally was scored by Kaylie Kriss, in the 25th minute.
Kriss got behind defenders off a Brooke Schmelter pass, and was able to put it in.
Mountain View (7-11) was able to control possession throughout the game, and often made runs behind the Colts' defense, only to be stopped.
"We were able to get the ball in the corner and make some crosses," Ellis said. "Their defense recovered on a lot of them, and their goalie made some great plays."
Mountain View will play top-seeded Flowing Wells on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Buena finishes its season at 10-8.

● Ironwood Ridge 3, Canyon del Oro 0: At Rincon, the Nighthawks' Kirsten Herrera had two key assists in the second half to help secure their triumph and set up a match with second-seeded Rincon on Wednesday.
Ironwood Ridge (10-5-3) coach Andy Bencomo said he was pleased with the victory, but knows his girls will have to step up their play if they want to upset the Rangers.
"Our girls know what they have to do," Bencomo said. "We hope they produce the way they know how to play."
CDO finishes at 10-7-1.

● Douglas 4, Desert View 0: At Desert View, the Bulldogs scored four second-half goals in a span of 15 minutes to advance to today's 4 p.m. matchup against second-seeded Santa Rita.
In first-half action, Jaguars goalkeeper Jenna Palacio quelled any and all attempts by the Bulldogs to put a goal in the net.
Two of Palacio's nine saves came off penalty kicks in the first half.
Justine Godoy welcomed a Leilani Morales pass to score the Bulldogs' first goal.
