Constable, Precinct 6 Democrats

Three-term veteran Cox will face Bernal

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 08.17.2008
Why are you running?
Cox: I have been the constable for the last 12 years and feel there is still lots of work to do. I have pushed for legislation to make the constable more accountable, getting legislation passed for an ethics committee and an increase in training.
Bernal: Because constables are responsible for serving civil and criminal papers of the Pima Justice Court, they interact daily with residents. In these interactions my passion for helping people and my desire to strengthen our community will bring fresh ideas and new commitment to the office.
What unique qualities do you have that will help you if elected?
Bernal: I have worked for the county, city, state and the private sector, which has allowed me to establish great people skills, knowledge of community resources and compassion for others. I bring great energy and enthusiasm to my work.
Cox: Having been the constable for the last 12 years and my 22 years with the Pima County Sheriff's Department, including 16 years as a member of the SWAT Team.
What changes, if any, would you like to see implemented once elected?
Cox: As one of 10 constables in Pima County, any change will be a group effort as in the past. All your constables are involved in the daily operation of the office.
Bernal: I would work more closely with local officials to find solutions, such as:
• Establishing a committee to bring landlords and residents together to engage in problem-solving issues associated with evictions and other housing problems.
• Creating a non-profit or other vehicle that can provide minor home repair assistance for elderly and disabled homeowners living in Precinct 6.
