YUMA — A University of Arizona student is one of five finalists in an online video competition that will send the winners to the national Democratic and Republic conventions to act as citizen journalists.
Contestants in the MySpace Impact contest had to submit a two-minute video answering three questions — why they vote, why they’re the best person for the job, and how they’ll get the scoop when no one else can.
Sara Pat Badgley, 21, of Yuma, focused on the latter with a mock video about getting an emergency call at 3 a.m. at the White House.
“I’m definitely excited they thought I was one of the top five,” Badgley said.
This will be the first presidential election in which Badgley will be able to vote.
She said she’s excited it’s this one because Sen. John McCain has been a congressional representative since before she was born and Sen. Barack Obama is making history as the first black nominee.
The two winners of the contest will be chosen by MySpace, MSNBC and NBC News. One of them will attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver Aug. 25-28 and the other will go to the Republican National Convention in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. Sept. 1-4.
The two will have an opportunity to post their reports on MySpace and MSNBC.
“It gives people another point of view, and in a democracy, you can never have too many perspectives,” Badgley said.
The winners will be named next Tuesday.
