Young voices: Question of the week

If you could ask presidential candidates one question, what would it be and why?

Editor's note: We received almost 100 responses from Tucson students about what they would ask Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. We will publish some of the responses on Mondays throughout October.
"Why do you not write your own speeches?" I was surprised to find out that most presidential candidates and presidents do not write their own speeches. I do not understand this. I am sure they say what elements they would like to be covered in each speech, but it still is not their own words. How can we expect a high political figure to do a great job leading the country if they cannot even do a simple job? Abraham Lincoln wrote his own speeches, including the Gettysburg Address. I say bring back someone like Abraham Lincoln, then maybe I will consider voting.

"What is your plan for fixing our economy, which is plummeting as we speak?" In today's society, it feels like everything is falling apart. Food and clothing prices are sailing high. These are some of our essential needs, but we can't afford them. Our housing market is very low and foreclosures on homes are out of control. As a result, rental prices on apartments are extremely high and unaffordable. As an 18-year-old who is getting ready to go into the world alone, it's a little intimidating with all this going on. I want to know if our next president is prepared for these challenges and ready to fix this chaos.

"Why did you choose your running mate, and how do you see them aiding you in the White House?" I feel that this should be made clear for all of the voters who have not yet decided which candidate they will support.

Mr. Obama I want to ask you a question: "Where do you go after the speeches are over?" Mr. McCain:: "Where do you go after the speeches are over?" I wanted to ask you this question because I am curious. Thank you.

I would ask if they were going to keep the promises that they made to get elected. If a presidential candidate gets elected because of the promises that he makes and he doesn't follow them, then we basically hired a liar.

What would he do to help the environment and build better communities? Sometimes and in some places, I see trees. When I go to the parks, I tell myself that we need more trees. We also need less pollution. We need places to be clean.

My question for Mr. John McCain, would be the following: "What ways can you help protect the polar bears from global warming?" I love polar bears and want them to stay on the Earth forever.
