New Orleans levees still being rebuilt
Re: the Sept. 2 article "Gustav swamps La., could have been worse."
Call me a cynic if you will, but the Corps of Engineers has had three years to rebuild the levees and put in new pumps.
After three years of construction, is New Orleans going to be evacuated each time a hurricane heads that way?
If that is the best the Corps of Engineers can do, then maybe, just maybe, we should just abandon New Orleans.

Palin, McCain disagree on oil
Re: the Aug. 31 article "Choice of Palin intensifies focus on domestic oil production."
Gov. Sarah Palin is an interesting choice for the Republican vice presidency. She faces the facts, reality and acts on her conclusions regardless of whom she has to confront, such as the environmentalists, and even the federal government.
Of interest, too, is her different position on the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, where she wants to drill, while John McCain is opposed.

Media disappoint in Goodman arrest
I trust the Star will come to the aid of the First Amendment by reporting fully on the Labor Day arrest, during a protest at the Republican Convention, of Amy Goodman, the award-winning newswoman, and of her colleagues.
If the major news media consistently fail to report — and to condemn editorially — the blatant intimidation of a few of their members, they will soon lose their own freedoms.

New approach for economy needed
The poor economy has politicians talking about a second stimulus package. Few people seem to realize that while such efforts were somewhat successful half a century ago they are totally useless now.
The whole idea behind such actions is to start a cascade that gets people to use the funds to buy goods, and that will increase the demand, which will result in the hiring of more workers.
Unfortunately none of these expectations can occur because, as seen by the recent package that did cause increased purchases, most items bought were made in other countries.
We need a new approach to improving the economy. Manipulating only taxes will not work, nor will borrowing trillions to fight wars or rebuild other nations. We have done this for almost six years now, and the only thing we have to show for this is a deteriorating infrastructure and increasing numbers of people without work.

View of conception has changed
Re: The Sept. 1 guest opinion "Keep 'soul' out of abortion debate."
The writer, Dr. Gilbert Shapiro, says in his otherwise well-reasoned call for keeping the issue of soul out of the abortion debate that "Christianity has always held that at conception the sperm-egg union is given a 'soul.'"
Early Christians had no real concept of conception and certainly not of the process by which is it accomplished. Sperm and egg were not discovered until modern science was born. Even the great 13th century Christian philosopher Thomas Aquinas did not postulate that the unborn child had a human soul until much later in the process.
As with most other contentious issues, the absence of evidence results in all kinds of unsubstantiated claims.

Nation's economy is out of balance
Re: the Aug. 29 letter "Voters control political future."
The writer defends the Bush administration, absolving it of primary responsibility for the state of our economy. He blames what he calls the "national economy."
So, who sets national economic policy? It is the president.
Republicans practice "supply-side economics." The last three Republican administrations have led us into recessions. The current administration could even experience a second recession.
A healthy economy is a delicate balance between supply and demand. Supply-siders legislate in favor of the providers of goods and services, giving them uncontrolled reign.
CEOs ignore the needs of the consumers (demand) by sending jobs overseas and keeping wages low. This imbalance kills the golden goose, the American consumer.
Supply-siders have caused eight of our nine recessions since 1950, according to Federal Reserve Economic Data. Supply without demand capability doesn't work.
We need to rebalance our economy with a consumer-side administration next November.

Tell us choices for cabinet posts
This is an open request to John McCain. Immediately introduce those who you will have serve on your Cabinet. I believe this will strengthen your chances of winning this election.
Strong choices in key positions (experienced and smart) would show the American people that not only are they voting for you and Sarah Palin, they are voting for a team that would be able to quickly and effectively take on the problems facing us today.
