Whirlwind three months are full of fun local activitiesTucson, Arizona | Published: 11.20.2008
My wife and I have created a new name for Oct. 1 since we have moved to this community. We call it "kiss and see ya" day. Yes indeed, we have found that the three months from that day to Jan. 1 are the fastest three months of the year.
Because summer is so hot, it seems events get moved to the more tolerable months with gorgeous weather. So now we have six months of community efforts packed into three months in addition to the holiday season.
That is why on Oct. 1 we give each other a kiss and symbolically say "see ya New Years!" Well folks, we are halfway through the "kiss and see ya" months , and boy, we have been lucky here on the Northwest Side.
A quick review shows that in the last six weeks the community has celebrated Harvest for Hope, when folks run and walk to raise food and funds for the Catalina Food bank. Then we were part of the amazing experience that is the SaddleBrooke Health Fair. It is by far the gold standard to help educate people in the community about health care services.
There was time for fun and support of the University of Arizona at the Cal/Cats football game. We then had the Arts in the Park in James D. Kreigh Park, which was two days of beautiful weather and amazing artwork.
We also got to celebrate the opening of the Oro Valley Marketplace, a gorgeous facility with abundant open space for walking and enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. How cool to see the opening of the first movie theater here in Oro Valley!
Marana had its "Fall Heritage Festival" bringing together people of all ages. It was truly a "Thriller" of an experience. We had the kickoff of Project Graduation with the three Amphi high schools coming together to work to keep kids safe.
The election season saw the gamut of emotions as this most important election brought us the elected officials to help with the next few years.
The Northern Pima County Chamber had its gala, "Dancing With the Stars," and the Marana chamber had its golf tournament with perfect weather and great camaraderie.
Whew! All that and more in just the first six weeks! Now the merriment really begins as Thanksgiving, Christmas and the New Year are upon us.
We have some great upcoming community events that we all should share:
● The Oro Valley tree lighting is at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5 in the courtyard at Town Hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
● Then Marana has its turn to light the tree from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Dec. 6 at the Marana Municipal Complex, 11555 W. Civic Center Drive..
● It is also not too late to register to march in the Oro Valley Holiday Parade on Dec. 13. Go online to www.orovalleyparade.org for more information.
Most importantly, we must remember that what we celebrate is not events or holidays but people coming together in our community. Time goes by quickly at this time of the year but the memories we create will last a lifetime.
Enjoy the journey,
Bob
