The dogs playing poker:
Rusty: This golden-Aussie mix was adopted from the Pima Animal Care Center.
Riley: The Great Dane was rescued from Pima Animal Care by SAFE — Saving Animals From Euthanasia — and was adopted after a brief time in SAFE foster care.
Kane: The American Staffordshire terrier was rescued from a bad situation about four years ago.
Pedro: The 4-year-old Chihuahua-terrier mix was adopted from the Humane Society of Southern Arizona in 2005.
Pachuco: The 4-year-old Chihuahua was adopted from the Humane Society in January 2006.
Cholla: This Rhodesian ridgeback-vizsla mix was adopted from the Pima Animal Care Center in February 2001 on the day she was scheduled to be euthanized.
Porkchop: The schnauzer mix was adopted from a friend of a friend after his previous owner realized he was allergic to the dog.
Mulford: This beagle was bought from Creature Comforts in Marana.
Harrison: He's a black Lab mixed with something huge. He came through the Foundation for Animals in Risk, an animal-rescue group.
Emma: The boxer mix was adopted nearly three years ago from the Humane Society as a companion for Cholla.
All of the dogs belong to Arizona Daily Star employees.
