VICTORVILLE, Calif. — A woman facing theft charges tried to get out of jail using a phony hospital letter claiming she needed a lifesaving pacemaker, authorities said.
Laqeisha Lyons, 35, was arrested May 9 after investigators tracked a Mercedes-Benz purchased with a stolen identity to the Mall of Victor Valley.
Lyons then arranged for the forged letter written on letterhead from a Los Angeles hospital to be faxed to San Bernardino County Superior Court, police Detective Jerry Shelton said.
"We found out the letter was completely forged," he said.
The detective then went to court to stop Lyons' release on her own recognizance.
"She would have never came back," Shelton said.
