Oro Valley
Council continues discussion series
Oro Valley Town Councilman Barry Gillaspie on Saturday will talk informally with members of the public as part of Council on Your Corner, an ongoing discussion series.
Gillaspie will be available from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Village Bake House, 7882 N. Oracle Road.

Oro Valley workshop to present funding program
A community funding workshop will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday in council chambers at Town Hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.
The workshop is an effort to familiarize local nonprofit agencies with the application process for town funding for the 2009-2010 fiscal year.
Participants will receive program details and application forms, which also will be posted online. The deadline to apply for funding is Feb. 13.

Oro Valley wants help clearing washes
The town of Oro Valley is looking for volunteer help to clean up trash and buffelgrass along washes. Individuals and organizations can participate through the town's Adopt-A-Wash program.

Public library plans third annual book festival
The Oro Valley Public Library's 2009 Book Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the library, 1305 W. Naranja Drive.
The event's theme, "Open Book to the Future," will feature keynote author J.A. Jance, a best-selling mystery writer who graduated from the University of Arizona; Mark Andersson, a bookbinder, book conservator and instructor; David Fitzsimmons, editorial cartoonist for the Arizona Daily Star; and artist Elizabeth McKee.

Candidate forums set
The seven candidates for Marana Town Council will participate in a series of panel forums, at which audience members may ask questions. Here are the dates, times and places:
● 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Heritage Highlands Clubhouse, 4949 W. Heritage Club Blvd.
● 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28 at Estes Elementary, 11279 W. Grier Road.
● 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 11 at Rattlesnake Ridge Elementary, 8500 N. Continental Loop Drive.
● 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 19 at the Marana Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon at Oasis at Wild Horse Ranch, 6801 N. Camino Verde.
Incumbents Carol McGorray, Herb Kai, Patti Comerford and Jon Post are being challenged by Kelle Maslyn, Larry Steckler and Bret Summers.
Voter registration deadline for the primary election is Feb. 9 and the primary is March 10. Registration deadline for the general election is April 20 and the election is May 19.
Strategic plan open house this evening
The town is hosting an open house at 6 p.m. today in the Marana Municipal Complex, 11555 W. Civic Center Drive, to get public input regarding the council's draft of the strategic plan.
Jewish Reform Shabbat planned for February
Beginning at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 6, Shabbat services will be held each Friday evening in the Tortolita Room of the Heritage Highlands Clubhouse, 4949 W. Heritage Club Blvd., in Dove Mountain.
Worshippers are encouraged to bring their tallis and kippa, although they are not required. Prayer books will be provided in English and Hebrew, with transliterations of all the prayers. Recorded music will accompany the prayers.
As the organizers do not have a Torah, there will be no formal Torah service, but a brief summary of the parsha for each week will be offered.
This is an attempt to form a new Jewish Reform congregation in the Northwest. For more information, call 990-3155.
Pinal County
Supervisors will discuss goals, challenges
The incoming Pinal County Board of Supervisors will make its first joint public appearance tomorrow morning at the Pinal Partnership monthly breakfast meeting.
Chairman and District 3 Supervisor David Snider, who was re-elected in November, will be joined by new supervisors Bryan Martyn of District 2 and Pete Rios of District 1 to talk about their goals and concerns for the county over the next four years.
Check-in for the meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. and the meeting begins at 8 a.m. at Dolce Vita at Superstition Mountain resort, 3301 S. Goldfield Road in Apache Junction. The cost is $15 for Pinal Partnership members and $20 for non-members. Payments are accepted in cash or check only.
