Marana council appoints interim police chief
The Marana Town Council approved the appointment of Terry Tometich as interim police chief at a special meeting Tuesday night.
Tometich, a Marana resident and former commander of the Arizona Department of Public Safety's Tucson bureau, was scheduled to begin work Wednesday. He is taking over for Chief Richard Vidaurri, who announced on April 15 that he would retire by June 30.
Tometich, 62, will be paid about $9,375 a month while Marana conducts a national search for a permanent chief.

Elks, others raise funds for Special Olympics
A fundraiser coordinated by the Catalina Mountain Elks Lodge No. 2815 and other organizations in the Catalina area raised about $23,000 for the Special Olympics of Pima County.
The fundraiser was held April 19 and included a motorcycle poker run, live music, arts and crafts exhibits, raffles, and live and silent auctions.
Neighborhood association garage sale on Saturday
A garage sale benefiting La Cañada/Magee Neighborhood Association will be held from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.
The site is 1422 W. Avenida de las Americas, which is on the west side of North La Cañada Drive just south of West Magee Road.
Items for sale will include antiques, collectibles, books, tools and furniture.
All proceeds will be used to support the neighborhood association's outreach projects.

Weststock music festival at Westward Look Resort
The Westward Look Resort, 245 E. Ina Road, will host a revival of the Woodstock festival from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday.
The event, known as Weststock, will include performances by the Rowdies, 22 Black, the Wayback Machine and the Power of Three, as well as local singer and composer Amber Norgaard.
The cost is $25 for chair seating if purchased today, or $25 at the gate for lawn seating, with $5 from each ticket being donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to benefit breast cancer research.

Opening reception for ranching display
An opening reception will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday to celebrate "Dudes and Cowboys: 100 Years of Rancho Linda Vista," an exhibit running through the end of May at the Acadia Ranch Museum in Oracle.
The display will include photographs, maps, furniture, tools and other ranching artifacts.
The reception will be held at the museum, 825 Mount Lemmon Road.

Golf tourney is benefit for arts in local schools
The first Swing for the Arts Golf Tournament fundraiser will be held Friday at the private Stone Canyon Golf Club, 14200 N. Hohokam Village Place.
Participants can choose to play golf only or take advantage of sponsorship opportunities.
Lunch will be served at 11 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. shotgun start.
The event is being sponsored by Merrill Lynch and presented by the Greater Oro Valley Arts Council. All proceeds will benefit promotion of the arts in local schools.

Three GOP candidates for state House to speak
The Oro Valley Republican Women will host a candidate forum on May 9 at the Oro Valley Country Club, 300 W. Greenock Drive.
The forum, which is open to the public, will feature three Republicans running in Legislative District 26.
The candidates for the state House of Representatives are Trent Humphries, Vic Williams and Marilyn Zerull. Two will advance through the September primary.
The event will start at 11:30 a.m.; lunch will be served at noon. The candidates will speak at 12:30 p.m.
The $17-per-person lunch will feature two menu choices, chicken piccata and shrimp Caesar salad.

Weather spotters needed during monsoon season
The National Weather Service is seeking area residents who can provide weather-related assistance during the monsoon season.
Those interested in providing reports on hail, wind damage and flooding can attend a "spotter" training session at 6:30 p.m. May 20 at the Oro Valley Town Hall, 11000 N. La Cañada Drive.

Picture Rocks
Community fair is set for Saturday
Citizens for Picture Rocks, a neighborhood group, will hold a community fair from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Picture Rocks Community Center, 5615 N. Sanders Road.
The fair is open to the public and will include an art and quilt show, games and crafts for children, and live music, as well as food and drinks.
There is no admission charge, but donations are encouraged to help cover expenses.
