Global Youth Service Day, April 26: Youth Volunteer Corps, for ages 11-18, will host service learning projects to celebrate Global Youth Service Day. Activities include writing letters to prisoners, permaculture farming, building a graywater harvesting system for a hip-hop gardening group, and more. The corps is supervised by Volunteer Center staff.
Rock art: Paint smooth river rocks, about the size of a grapefruit, for a memorial wall at a hospice inpatient unit. Family and other loved ones' names are added to the rocks.
National disaster relief: If you can help with relief operations for three weeks at a time, a national agency will pay your travel, meals and lodging expenses. A variety of positions are available.
Free time and flexible? A behavioral-health agency needs volunteers, willing to help at a moment's notice, to assist with events, clerical coverage or other tasks.
Feed the hungry: Serve food to homeless and low-income folks at sites around Tucson.
Sharing art and ideas: Art museum volunteers combine a love of art with lively discussion. They present one-hour programs about museum collections to assisted-living or nursing-home residents.
Domestic-violence hot line: Answer 24-hour phones at domestic-violence shelters. Assist women in crisis, determine their needs and help with shelter activities.
Youth VA volunteers: Youths age 15 or older are valued members of a team at veterans medical center. Explore health-care careers, interact with patients and gain experience for college scholarships or jobs. Call Deborah Brookshire, 629-1822.
