The Marana Western Heritage Arena hosted about 150 of the Southwest's top rodeo competitors during the Marana Timed Event Rodeo on Saturday and Sunday.
The event, part of the Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association's 2008 circuit, included competitions in barrel racing, breakaway roping, calf roping, steer wrestling and team roping. Entrants were vying for about $10,000 in prize money. Some of the top local performers included Arnold Burruel and Clay Parsons, who took first in a team roping event, while Marana resident Emily Kiehne took first in a barrel-racing competition.
Dan Post, president of the Marana Western Heritage Committee, said officials with the Grand Canyon Pro Rodeo Association look forward to holding another event in Marana.
"They were really pleased with the Marana facility," Post said. "They like the location, they like the grounds. They indicated they wanted to come back as soon as possible."
The arena will be in use again this weekend, as the Marana Junior Rodeo hosts an event beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.
