The first Tucson Symphony MasterWorks Chamber Orchestra program of the 2009-10 season, Mendelssohn and Haydn, will feature Music Director and Conductor George Hanson conducting the TSO in the Overture to Felix Mendelssohn's Fingal's Cave, Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 101, "The Clock," and the world premiere of Ghosts, a work by C.F. Winger, who achieved international stardom in the 1990s as the leader of the rock band Winger.
Performances are at 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday at Catalina Foothills High School, 4300 E. Sunrise Drive.
Winger's parents were jazz musicians and he began studying piano at age six. Two years later, he began playing professionally with his two older brothers. He began studying classical guitar and composition with Sam Guarnaccia, director of the nationally recognized guitar program at Denver University, when he was still in his teens.
In the early 1990s with his band, Winger, he released the platinum recordings "Winger, In the Heart of the Young" and "Pull" and led the quartet on sold-out world tours.
Tickets, $30 to $40, are available at the TSO Box Office at 2175 N. Sixth Ave. or by phone at 882-8585. Box office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays.
