Suspect is charged in crash that killed 11
A man has been charged in the crash that killed 11 illegal immigrants June 6 near Sonoita, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
Oscar Garay-Mariscal, 22, was charged with being a guide for 27 people who entered the country illegally, the press release stated.
Garay-Mariscal, also known as Garay-Lizarraga, made his initial appearance Wednesday in federal court.
Garay-Mariscal and another suspect helped guide and transport the illegal immigrants into Southern Arizona before they were ordered to board a 2000 Ford Excursion in an unidentified location, the press release stated.
Another person was suspected of driving the vehicle eastbound through the intersection of Arizona 82 and Arizona 83 when the driver was told to slow down, the press release stated.
When the driver saw a U.S. Border Patrol vehicle going in the opposite direction, the driver was ordered to speed up.
That's when one of the SUV's tires failed, the press release stated. The vehicle rolled over and many of the people were ejected.
He is facing a maximum penalty of death or life in prison.
