A mechanic for U.S. Customs and Border Protection was sentenced for stealing a pair of night-vision goggles from the agency's aircraft facility and selling them on the Internet.
James Williams, 37, pleaded guilty in September to theft of government property. He will serve three months of probation and pay restitution, a release from the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Williams told authorities he stole the goggles, a battery pack and carrying case while working as an aircraft mechanic for Customs at its facility at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
The goggles were purchased for $6,900 by Customs. Williams sold them on eBay to another man in Arizona for $3,700, the release said.
When investigators tracking the sale contacted the buyer, they found he had already resold them on eBay to a man in Fairbanks, Alaska, who relinquished them, the release said.
Neither buyer knew the goggles were stolen, the release said.
