A smuggler who lost control of his vehicle and crashed, leaving two people dead and four others critically injured, was sentenced to seven years in prison Thursday.
Francisco Javier Morquecho-Valdez, 20, pleaded guilty to transporting an illegal for the purpose of commercial advantage or private financial gain resulting in death.
The sentence stems from an incident on April 13 when Morquecho-Valdez — an illegal immigrant — was driving a stolen pickup truck carrying 14 other illegal immigrants.
He was driving on Arizona 90 near Sierra Vista when he lost control and ran off the road, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona.
The truck hit a tree and rolled, ejecting several of the illegal immigrants who were in the bed of the truck.
Morquecho-Valdez ran from the scene and told others to run as well but all were caught, the release said.
He initially claimed to be a passenger but later admitted to being the driver. Other survivors also identified Morquecho-Valdez as the driver, the release said.
In the two months before the crash, Morquecho-Valdez was found to have been in the United States illegally on nine occasions, the release said.
