A Tucson police officer has been indicted by the Arizona Attorney General's Office on charges that she committed fraud on public housing documents, authorities said.
Officer Maria Leon was fired from the Police Department on Tuesday.
She is facing six counts of fraudulent scheme or practice.
The city's Housing Management Division informed the department that there were improprieties in the paperwork Leon submitted for public housing, said Sgt. Mark Robinson, a police spokesman.
Leon, who lived in public housing, was booked into the Pima County jail but has since been released, Robinson said.
The Police Department began investigating Leon in August.
The department conducted administrative and criminal investigations and presented the results to the Attorney General's Office on Sept. 9, Robinson said.
Afterward, the department gave Leon a notice of intent to terminate and convened a termination hearing board, he said.
The board upheld a recommendation by Leon's supervisors to fire her, he said.
Robinson did not know the details of the fraud investigation.
Leon had been with the department since 1995, when she worked as a civilian employee in the records section.
She was hired as an officer in 2006, and she was a patrol officer before she was reassigned to police headquarters during the investigation, Robinson said.
