Hospice training: A free 30-hour orientation for hospice patient support volunteers is being conducted this month. Volunteers provide companionship and respite, run errands and shop for the terminally ill.
Book drive: In October 2007, a literacy agency created a family reading program. Bookcases shaped like blue houses were filled with books that families could read together. It's been an exciting year of reading, and the bookcases need new books. Individuals or groups can collect new or gently used children's books to distribute to Blue Book House bookcases.
Pet-clinic assistant: Help staff with animals from pre-surgery preparation to post-surgical monitoring. Some surgeries are open to observation. Volunteers age 15 or older may apply.
Tax preparation for low-income families: No experience needed. Free IRS training for new preparers and an online refresher course for veteran preparers. Site coordinators, translators and greeters are also in demand.
Office help that benefits children: Learn new skills to enhance your résumé while volunteering at Child Protective Services. Duties include correspondence, professional customer service, filing and computer work. Volunteer as little or as often as you like. For details, contact Susan Weidener at 881-3300, Ext. 112.
Volunteer advisory council, vice chairperson: Serve a mid-city botanical garden in several capacities. The vice chairperson finds relevant speakers for monthly meetings and assists with projects. After one year as the vice chairperson, the volunteer becomes chairperson for one year. It's a fun, exciting position that enhances visitors' experiences at the gardens.
Feed the hungry: Serve food to homeless and needy folks at sites around Tucson. Thousands of meals are served each month.
Spanish-speaking adult to facilitate a serious illness support group: Serve four hours a month facilitating a group for families that have a child diagnosed with a serious illness.
Filing: Develop clerical experience by filing alphabetically at a South Side state office. Lifting boxes and climbing a small stool would be required. A brief orientation at the Volunteer Center is required. Call 881-3300.
