No need to wear a yarmulke, but festival patrons should bring their appetites to Congregation Or Chadash's first Annual Cook-off and Jewish Food Festival. The event's slogan is, "you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy Jewish food."
The cook-off and food festival will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Brandi Fenton Memorial Park, 3482 E. River Road.
The cook-off, reserved for amateur chefs, is from 8 a.m. to noon. Chefs have until the end of the day today to register.
There will be a cook-off award ceremony and free entertainment after noon. The cost to attend the food festival is $2 for adults, and the event is free for children under 12. Half of the proceeds will be donated to the Community Food Bank.
Amateur cooks will compete in 12 different categories: brisket, stuffed cabbage, knishes, vegetarian wildcard, a Sephardic dish, chopped liver, fish salad, blintzes, kugell, mandelbread, rugelah and cheesecake. Food and beverages for sale will be available in "tasting portions" and "full portions."
Tucson's top restaurants and chefs will be whipping up a flurry of entrees for purchase. There will be kosher vendors as well.
For more information call Diane Kerrihard at 237-7790. Chefs can register online at www.orchadash-tucson.org/JewishCookoff.html
