Three people were arrested in a gang-related altercation that left a Tucson teen shot dead outside a South Side convenience store Monday afternoon, police said.
Roy David Fierros, 17, was shot at about 12:25 p.m. outside the Circle K store at South 12th Avenue and West Drexel Road.
Then, according to police, three suspects in the shooting got into a blue sport utility vehicle and drove away.
Police pursued the SUV, which crashed into a mobile home near South First Avenue and East Drexel Road after the driver lost control. All three suspects ran from the SUV, and two were caught after a short chase on foot, police said.
Helicopters and police dogs were used to find and arrest the third suspect Monday afternoon.
The Tucson Police Department gave the following account:
Fierros was at the soda fountain when he was confronted by three young men who all were dressed in blue.
An argument started, and all four went outside to fight. After they left the store, one of the three men pulled out a gun and shot the teen. Fierros tried to run away, but he collapsed in the parking lot.
A friend of Fierros' was arrested after going into the taped-off crime scene and refusing to get out, Lt. Rick Middleton said. The friend got into an altercation with police and was pepper-sprayed before he was put in the back of a patrol car. He was cited on suspicion of disorderly conduct and possession of marijuana and released.
A shopping center next door to the Circle K includes restaurants, clothing stores and other businesses.
"Fortunately, no other citizens or bystanders were injured," Middleton said. "This could happen anywhere. Everyone needs to be careful of what they do and where they are, but this appears to be an isolated incident."
The homicide is the 57th in city this year. Police said they believe the victim and the suspects all had gang affiliations.
