Two men were sentenced in federal court Monday for obtaining nearly $1 million in stolen Social Security checks in Mexico and processing those checks through banks in Arizona, according to a U.S. Attorney's Office press release.
Alfonso Julio Ojeda-Madero, 33, of Tucson was sentenced in Phoenix to 15 months in federal prison after he pleaded guilty to possession of stolen mail, the press release said.
Louis Curiel III, 49, of Goodyear received probation after he pleaded guilty to conspiring with Ojeda-Madero to convert government funds. Curiel returned more than $200,000 to authorities before he was charged, the press release said.
Between January 2002 and January 2003, Ojeda-Madero acquired Social Security checks payable to beneficiaries in Mexico through his financial services company and sent them to Curiel in Arizona for deposit into a corporate account, the press release said.
In December 2002, the men switched to a different Arizona bank and the scheme ended when they tried to convert a six-figure corporate tax refund check obtained by Ojeda-Madero, the press release said.
Both men are jointly responsible for paying more than $622,000 in restitution to an Arizona bank and more than $104,000 to the Social Security Administration.
