Neighbor worries that weeds are mosquito haven

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.30.2008
Emma M. Lewis is fed up with the owners of a vacant house in her neighborhood. For months weeds have been growing in the front and back yards of the house, in the 1000 block of South Third Avenue, and she's convinced that they harbor tons of mosquitoes.
"It's been like this all summer long and maybe even a month before," Lewis said. "The mosquitoes are coming out of that field left and right. I have scarring on my legs and my arms."
Calls to the city have gone ignored, Lewis said.
"I'm a nice person, but things have got to get done and if no one speaks up, nothing gets done," Lewis said.
Ivey Schmitz, a deputy director with the Department of Neighborhood Resources, said her division has received two complaints about the property.
A complaint was received on Aug. 10, and a courtesy postcard was mailed to the property owners notifying them they needed to take care of the weeds, Schmitz said.
A new complaint was filed on Sept. 18, and a follow-up inspection was conducted Sept. 24, Schmitz said.
A notice of violation was scheduled to be sent Monday to the owners of that property and another in the 1000 block of South Fourth Avenue, Schmitz said.
The property owners will be given 30 days to rectify the situation, Schmitz said.
Complaints about the mosquitoes were forwarded to the Pima County Health Department, Schmitz said.
