Student of the Week: Katelyn Flanigan

Katelyn Flanigan Sabino High School, senior
Tucson, Arizona | Published: 09.16.2008
Age: 17
Parents' names: Chad and Karen Flanigan
Favorite class: Spanish.
"I had a really good Spanish teacher my sophomore year, and I have her for Advanced Placement Spanish this year," Katelyn said. "She makes Spanish really fun."
Activities in school: Katelyn is in the Key Club, the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.
Activities outside of school: Katelyn is involved in activities at Pantano Christian Church and serves as a member of its youth group. Every year on Veterans Day weekend, she helps build houses for needy people in Rocky Point, Sonora. She worked as a counselor at a children's camp for five years and also plays bass guitar in a band.
Whom would you have lunch with if you could have lunch with anyone? Stephen Colbert.
What books are you reading now? "Nineteen Minutes" by Jodi Picoult, which Katelyn says is for fun, and "Beowulf," which was assigned. "I didn't think I'd like it, but my teacher makes it interesting."
Whom do you admire most? "My dad. He's always worked his hardest at everything he does. No matter how big or small a task, he does it to the best of his ability."
What's your favorite song? "Chasing" by Desperation Band.
Plans after high school: Katelyn wants to attend the University of Arizona.
Dream job: "A job that helps people. I'd like to use my love for Spanish and kids, and do something that makes the best of my talents. I just haven't figured out how to connect all my hobbies yet."
Dream car: Dodge Neon. In purple.
Favorite place in Tucson: Church.
Hidden talents: Patience with children and the ability to solve the Rubik's Cube. "I did it once in two minutes," Katelyn said.
Vouch: "Katelyn is very conscientious both at school and at work," according to Vicki and Bob Saxon, who are her employers at BadgeMan, a local company offering security badges, awards and buttons.
"She is a caring person. In fact, we were so impressed when she had lunch with her brother, who is a freshman at Sabino, the first day of school. We don't think too many sisters would do that. She is the kind of person you would like to have as a neighbor or friend."
