A man was shot to death Thursday night, and another was critically wounded when an argument erupted outside a West Side house around 8 p.m., police said Friday.
Armando G. Rodriguez went to a house in the 1400 block of Hualpai Road — near West Speedway and North Silverbell Road — with the intent of confronting a 27-year-old man who lived there, according to Mark Robinson, a Tucson Police Department spokesman.
Rodriguez, 23, and the man got into an argument, and at some point Rodriguez pulled out a handgun and shot the 27-year-old, Robinson said.
A guest at the house then returned fire, fatally wounding Rodriguez, he said.
Rodriguez and the 27-year-old were taken to St. Mary's Hospital in separate vehicles, at which time the staff notified Tucson police, Robinson said.
Police had already received a call about gunshots in the neighborhood and found shell casings in the area when they arrived, Robinson said. The guest who shot Rodriguez was gone.
The two men were transferred to University Medical Center, where the 27-year-old underwent surgery and was listed in critical condition Friday. Rodriguez, however, was pronounced dead shortly after 9 p.m.
The gang unit is handling the investigation, and searching for the shooter who fled, because some of those involved have gang ties, although the motive for the shooting is not gang related, Robinson said.
The motive will not be released until detectives can speak with the surviving victim, he said.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 911 or 88-CRIME, the anonymous tip line of the Pima County Attorney's Office.
