So you want to be a volunteer? The Volunteer Center will present a free two-hour workshop from 9 to 11 a.m. Sept. 26. Everyone is welcome. The public will gain perspective on opportunities in volunteering. To be discussed: trends and rewards of volunteerism; how to find opportunities; and the role, responsibilities and liabilities of volunteering. Volunteer coordinators from 20 agencies will be on hand from 11 a.m. to noon to describe volunteering opportunities. Call Marilyn Robinson, senior manager for training, at 881-3300.
Tutor, mentor young pupils: Join a national tutoring and mentoring program serving kindergartners through third-graders. Share your life experiences as you improve your student's literacy. Volunteers who put in 10 to 12 hours per week are eligible for a $200 monthly stipend. Call Linda Krause at 881-3300, Ext. 107.
Fall is for fun with Youth Volunteer Corps: The corps, for ages 11 to 18, engages youths in challenging and rewarding educational projects. You'll meet like-minded friends and choose from cutting-edge projects and relaxing social events. YVC is sponsored by the Volunteer Center. Youths are supervised by trained AmeriCorps team leaders. Call 881-3300 for an application that lists all the projects.
Adults need love, too: Show caring support to adults recovering from mental illness, alcohol abuse or drug addiction. Talk, play games, go on outings, practice daily living skills or simply be a companion in a residential setting. Individuals or groups can help. Patient escorts at the VA Center: Use a wheelchair or gurney to take patients to designated areas. Deliver lab specimens, patient charts, late food trays and other essential items throughout the hospital. Call Gayle Donkin at 629-1822.
Volunteer income-tax assistance: Help needy families eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. Volunteer site coordinators, greeters and preparers are needed at a local Arizona Department of Economic Security office. Call Linda Krause at 881-3300, Ext. 107.
Educational tours: Use a cordial, interactive style with school groups to emphasize the historical context of a missile museum. Training covers the exhibits and ways to stimulate children's interests. Contact Titan Missile Museum Director Yvonne Morris at 625-4759.
Design and construct props: Are you creative and artistic? This is the perfect outlet as kid-sized houses are designed, built and painted for a family literacy event. Work on Fairy Tale Lane, Nursery Rhyme Road and more. Call Mary Jan Bancroft at Make Way for Books at 721-2334.
Horse handler: Groom, tack, lead and untack horses in a therapeutic riding class. The emphasis for horse handlers is on safety to enable riders to perform their best. Two to three hours per week. Call Janet Johns at Therapeutic Riding of Tucson, 749-2360.
