A 20-year-old woman was injured Thursday morning when she tried to intervene in a fight among three pit bull dogs, an official said.
The incident occurred around 7:30 a.m. when the woman was walking her two pit bulls on leashes in the 1900 block of West Merlin Road — near South La Cholla Boulevard and West 36th Street, according to Capt. Norm Carlton, a Tucson Fire Department spokesman.
Another pit bull strayed away from a nearby residence and began fighting with her dogs, he said.
The woman tried to get in the middle and was bitten, Carlton said. She suffered injuries that were not life-threatening and was taken to a hospital.
The owner of the dog that came from the residence was cited, according to Kim Janes, manager of the Pima Animal Care Center.
The dog was impounded, and the agency will conduct a dangerous-dog assessment, during which they can declare the animal a "vicious dog," Janes said.
Should that occur, the owner has an opportunity to keep the dog under these rules:
The owner must ensure that the dog is securely confined; it must wear a muzzle and leash in public; a sign must be posted on the property warning of the dangerous dog, and insurance must be obtained.
If the owner does not want to follow the requirements, the dog could be euthanized, Janes said.
