Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll has traded in his gas guzzler and gone over to the green side.
The Arizona Daily Star reported in May that Carroll's Dodge Ram pickup truck, with just 17 miles to the gallon on the highway, got the worst gas mileage of any vehicle driven by a City Council member or county supervisor.
Elected officials and top administrators at the city and the county are issued a vehicle of their choice and can fill up at a city or county fueling station.
Carroll said at the time he needed his pickup truck to travel the rough dirt roads of his largely rural district, which includes Vail, Corona de Tucson and Green Valley.
But Carroll said earlier this week he had second thoughts about his gas use and asked for a new vehicle.
Fleet Services sent the request through County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry because Carroll's vehicle, a 2006 model, is too new for replacement under normal circumstances.
Fleet Services already had a 2008 Ford Escape hybrid that was ordered by former Public Defender Robert Hooker. Hooker died in a car accident before he could claim the vehicle, and his replacement, Bob Hirsch, declined to take a county vehicle.
Carroll turned in his pickup Wednesday. It will be returned to the motor pool.
His new SUV gets an estimated 34 miles per gallon in the city and 30 on the highway.
