One of three men arrested in connection with an October 2006 home invasion pleaded guilty to burglary Friday and is facing up to 8 3/4 years in prison.
Jesse H. Granillo, 22, admitted he was the lookout on Oct. 14, 2006, when friends of his decided to break into a Corona de Tucson home, southeast of Tucson, to steal property.
Granillo will be sentenced on Aug. 26 by Pima County Superior Court Judge Richard Nichols.
A group of men forced their way into the home and held a woman and her two children at gunpoint before fleeing, according to prosecutors.
Pima County Sheriff's Deputy Lorence Jove spotted them while on his way to the home in response to a 911 call.
Jove pulled the suspects' SUV over, but when he stepped out of his car, the men sped away.
The driver ran over a spike strip that was set out to puncture his tires, but he continued north on Houghton, driving more than 120 mph.
When the SUV reached East Rita Road, it crashed and the men ran into the desert near a neighborhood.
Jove shot Manuel Diaz, 19, to death after Diaz stopped, crouched down and wheeled around in an "aggressive" manner twice, sheriff's officials said.
It turned out the black object Diaz was carrying was a bundled-up shirt.
Two of the suspects were arrested in short order; the third was arrested at daybreak hiding in the area, sheriff's officials said.
Granillo, Joseph Anthony Ochoa, 23, and Brandon Felix, 24, were each charged with first-degree murder under the felony murder rule, which allows prosecutors to charge suspects with murder when a death occurs during the commission of a felony, such as robbery.
Granillo pleaded guilty to burglary Friday, and Ochoa and Felix pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree burglary earlier this year.
The three were offered plea agreements because jurors might not have been able to determine who actually entered the home because all the suspects wore masks, and there were others involved who have not yet been identified, said Rick Unklesbay, chief trial counsel for the Pima County Attorney's Office.
Ochoa was sentenced to 12 years in prison in May.
Felix is awaiting sentencing.
