For Andy Kayner, taxidermy was an art, an art he had been perfecting since he was 18 years old. On July 5, 1978, Kayner was putting the finishing touches on an elk he was preparing at a shop owned by John Doyle. His goal was to make the animal "look attractive and lifelike." It was his interest in art and his love of the outdoors that drew him to taxidermy. Kayner said he pestered Doyle every day until the shop owner gave him a job.
