Tucsonans rank in the top 20 percent of drivers nationwide for how long we can go in between car crashes.
On average, drivers in Tucson each have a crash once every 11 years.
Those who crash the least, in Sioux Falls, S.D., crash only once every 14.6 years.
Our nation's capital is the most crash-prone city: Drivers in Washington, D.C., each crash an average of once every 5.4 years.
The crash statistics were released this week in Allstate's America's Best Drivers Report.
Tucson comes out on top of many categories broken down by age and gender, when compared with the rest of the top 20 cities with Allstate policy holders.
Of those top 20 cities, Tucson's male drivers beat out all the rest, as do the female drivers. Tucson's men crash once every 11.8 years, and Tucson's women crash once every 10.1 years.
Among the top cities, our baby boomers crash the least often of the four generations broken down in the report.
Tucson baby boomers crash once every 12.2 years, whereas Tucson Generation Y drivers crash an average of once every seven years.
Even at this more frequent crash level, Tucson Generation Y drivers rank second out of the Generation Y drivers in the top 20 Allstate cities.
The national average for all ages and genders is one crash per person every 10 years. Tucson beats that by going one year longer.
The best-drivers report is based on crash data collected from claims made by Allstate Insurance company customers in nearly 200 U.S. cities during 2005 and 2006. The crashes used in the analysis were only those that warranted a property damage claim.
According to national traffic data, most crashes happen at night, and most fatal crashes happen on Saturdays.
Allstate said its report is a reliable picture of the communities surveyed because Allstate policyholders make up about 12 percent of drivers nationwide.
