July Fourth is a time for fireworks, barbecuing and swimming in the pool.
But to make sure that Independence Day festivities go off without a hitch, the Tucson Fire Department is offering some safety tips.
"We definitely get an increased number of calls on the Fourth of July," said Capt. Norm Carlton, a Tucson Fire Department spokes-man. "A good majority of the calls are due to fireworks — someone saw a spark coming from a certain direction."
But the department does not track the number of fires or burn injuries that are caused by fireworks, which are illegal in Arizona, Carlton said.
In addition to taking safety precautions, the following road closures are in place because of the city's fireworks show Friday night:
● Sentinel Peak, from where the fireworks are launched, will be closed at Panorama Circle at 5 a.m. Friday to prepare for the show, which starts about 9 p.m.
Motorists will not be able to travel up "A" Mountain after 5 a.m. The road is expected to reopen by 6 a.m. Saturday.
● At 5 p.m., South Mission Road will be closed from West Starr Pass to West Mission Lane and will reopen after the fireworks show. West Granada Avenue will also be closed at 5 p.m. from the frontage road to West Cushing Street. Granada will reopen by 10:30 p.m.
● After the fireworks show, several restrictions will be in place to keep eastbound and westbound traffic on Congress Street and Broadway free-flowing to clear Downtown.
From Granada Avenue to Fifth Avenue, northbound and southbound traffic will not be able to cross Congress or Broadway.
The intersections at Church, Stone, Scott and Sixth avenues will be restricted to right-hand turns only for northbound and southbound motorists.
Traffic signals will flash yellow during the restrictions, which will last until 10:30 p.m.
