Unemployment rates are soaring in Southern Arizona, at least in highly paid government job circles. Between retirements, early-retirement incentives, promotions, wanderlust and a few people wearing out their welcomes, many of the area's highest-profile and best-paying public jobs are available.
And with City Manager Mike Hein scheduled for a hastily called sit-down with the City Council over his job status Tuesday morning, the list could get a little longer.
In March alone, 240 city employees signed up to take advantage of early-retirement incentives that sent numerous department heads, deputy directors and assistant directors looking for the exit.
While Tucson leads the field in this developing leadership void, with seven vacant department-head positions, the city isn't alone. Across the government plaza, Pima County has three of its top jobs open, with others scattered through the smaller communities.
So dust off those résumés. Here are some of the openings in town.
