Tucson Time Capsule : High school kids work at summer jobs in '78

Tucson, Arizona | Published: 06.26.2008
Youth Conservation Corps members worked with rocks and cement in the desert heat for minimum wage and were happy to do it. The federally funded program gave 95 high school students outdoor jobs at Fort Lowell Park, Tucson Mountain Park and Colossal Cave. On June 26, 1978, these students were working on a display of a canyon creek at Fort Lowell Park. Other students built walls, park entrances and picnic facilities. They worked outdoors 30 hours each week and also received 10 hours of environmental instruction. It beats telling their children they walked to school through snow drifts.
