The promotional group responsible for bringing artists and performances to the University of Arizona has laid off three employees as part of a reorganization effort.
UApresents cut two full-time workers and a half-time marketing and media employee on Tuesday in a move designed to create more efficiency in the department, spokesman Mario DiVetta said.
The group, which books acts for the UA's Centennial Hall, has been struggling financially for several years.
Although the arts presenter won't know until early next month how well it fared in 2007-08, DiVetta was optimistic that it would post a positive result.
Several concerts booked in the last fiscal year, including the sold-out Itzhak Perlman recital in January, were solid hits.
Others, though, had sparse attendance. Latin singer-songwriter Perla Batalla with cumbia-lounge act Charanga Cakewalk attracted no more than 400 people to the 2,300-seat Centennial Hall in November.
UApresents has had financial problems in the past. In 2006, UA President Robert Shelton agreed to put on hold more than $1.2 million UApresents owed, including $952,000 from an accumulated deficit and $260,000 from a university loan used to buy a new ticketing system.
