Tucson's 11th annual El Día de San Juan Fiesta, which celebrates the beginning of the summer rains, will take place Tuesday on West Congress Street at the Santa Cruz River.
The free public festival will feature horseback performers, mariachis, folklóricos, games, other activities and food.
The event, from 5 to 10 p.m., is held in honor of St. John the Baptist, patron saint of water. Spanish missionaries brought the tradition to the Southwest in the 1600s, and West Side residents revived the tradition in 1998.
According to legend, explorer Francisco Vásquez Coronado stood at the dry Santa Cruz River on June 24, 1540, and asked St. John on his feast day to bring water for the crops. When the rain came, he proclaimed June 24 as the start of the summer rains.
