Thanks to Star readers, the Arizona Daily Star's Sportsmen's Fund Send a Kid to Camp program has exceeded its goal of raising $200,000 to send at least 720 children to camp this summer.
This year, 1,300 donations totaling $210,349 have been tallied.
Still on a waiting list, however, are 86 Girl Scouts from at-risk neighborhoods or in foster families who want to attend camp. This is down from 236.
Because the Sportsmen's Fund surpassed its goal, the board voted to pay for 100 of those girls to go to camp. The cost is about $225 a camper.
Summer camp gives children experiences they may not have at home and puts them in an environment that demonstrates positive values, inspiring them to do more and be more.
Send a Kid to Camp raises money so children from low-income households can go to YMCA, Boy Scout and Girl Scout camps, and to Camp Courage burn camp.
Last year, this mission was expanded to send children whose parents or guardians are in the military to the local camps for free.
Since 1947, the Sportsmen's Fund, with the support of Star readers, has raised money to help pay for more than 32,000 children to go to camp.
The Sportsmen's Fund is one of the oldest 501(c)(3) charities in Southern Arizona. At least 97 cents of every dollar spent goes to send children to camp.
Your contribution is tax- deductible and qualifies with the state of Arizona for the working-poor charitable tax credit of up to $400.
