A Mexican man was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison on drug charges related to a tunnel that ran across the border.
Francisco Valle-Hurtado was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than 17,000 pounds of cocaine across the border, according to Sandy Raynor, a U.S. Attorney's Office spokeswoman.
Valle-Hurtado of Naco, Sonora, was extradited to the United States in May 2006 to face charges related to the Naco drug tunnel.
The tunnel connected a mobile home in Naco, Ariz., to a walled-in space between two homes across the border in Naco, Sonora. More than 20 tons of cocaine were smuggled through the tunnel from 1996 to 1999.
Valle-Hurtado was convicted in November 2007. He was sentenced by U.S. District Chief Judge John M. Roll.
