Donate blood for a chance at free gas

Trying to stem the usual summer drop-off in blood donations, the Arizona Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross is offering a chance at free gas and other gifts to encourage donations through the coming holiday and into summer.
"Blood donations historically decrease when people are traveling, often causing the blood supply to fall below safe levels," said Debra Deininger, a spokeswoman for the American Red Cross in Tucson.
"We have projected that we will need to see 23,000 people to donate blood now through Labor Day in order to maintain an adequate supply throughout the summer.
"Help fill up our blood bank and you have a chance to fill up at the gas pump for free."
This weekend, all donors at the Broadway and Foothills donor centers in Tucson will be entered into a daily drawing for a $50 gas gift card. On Monday — Memorial Day — donors at the Broadway and Foothills centers will receive a barbecue meal and be entered into a drawing for a $150 gas card.
Anyone who donates from now through Sept. 8 will receive a free water bottle or T-shirt and be entered into a weekly drawing for a $500 sporting-goods gift card.
The Red Cross has extended its operating hours in Tucson through Monday. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. Call 1-800-GiveLife or go to www.givelife.org to make an appointment.
