Achilles graduated this spring with a bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology. The 22-year-old is part of the Surface Stereoscope Imager team, which serves as the Mars lander's eyes by providing high-resolution images of the surrounding landscape. The camera will prove instrumental in determining where the lander will dig.
What is your role with the Phoenix Mars Lander? "I began three years ago as a NASA Space Grant intern and worked with the Surface Stereoscope Imager team. I have been involved as a member of the testing and calibration team, and now I will work as a representative to the strategic science team and also as an instrument sequence engineer."
Name one result you hope to see from the Phoenix Mars Lander mission. "I hope the mission will successfully explore polar ice and receive interesting data that will help us understand the composition of the soil and how the polar regions are unique to Mars."
Does the prospect of life on Mars — or conditions to support life — fuel your passion for working on this project? "I believe that searching for organic molecules and understanding the composition of the soil is important to coming closer to seeing if conditions to support life exist. Therefore, I am interested and excited to see what Phoenix finds."
