It's been a long time since Republican Randy Graf won an election. There was the unsuccessful primary bid against Rep. Jim Kolbe in 2004. And after getting through a crowded primary, the former state lawmaker lost in his match- up against Democrat Gabrielle Giffords in 2006.
And last Saturday, at the Republican state convention, where the GOP picked delegates for the national convention this summer — Graf tried to get a seat not once, but three times.
Each time, he lost.
"The situation is what it is," said Graf, who didn't support John McCain during the presidential primary but was wearing a McCain sticker that day.
Even though he might part ways with McCain on some issues — like immigration — Graf says he's backing the presumptive GOP nominee.
"Any election is about choice," he said. "When it comes to this general election, it's John McCain versus Barack Obama, and that choice is easy."
Ray to the rescue
As Graf sought a delegate seat, Pima County Supervisor Ray Carroll was on another call.
After a very brief appearance at last Saturday's convention, Carroll rushed off to a nearby Mesa hospital with Green Valley Republican activist Pete Davis, who had suddenly passed out.
Carroll accompanied Davis to the hospital and missed all of the day's festivities.
"He was absolutely fantastic," says Davis, who spent the night in the hospital and is awaiting test results. "He even called my wife and calmed her down."
Knowledge is power
Ward 2 City Councilman Rodney Glassman's alphabet soup is already crowded, but he just got another accolade.
He holds five degrees, and he just recently passed the Arizona State Bar exam.
That means if he wanted to write his name out professionally, it would be: Rodney Glassman, J.D., Ph.D., MBA, MPA. He also has a bachelor's degree in agricultural economics. The doctorate is for his studies in arid land resource science, and the other degrees are his law degree and two business master's degrees. Oh, and he also has his real estate license. The prospect is about to bowl over Mayor Bob Walkup, who announced Glassman's success at Tuesday's council meeting.
"The notion that we have a member of the council that's a lawyer is almost more than I can handle," Walkup said.
If you're up in time . . .
Arizona's Jon Kyl, Senate Republican whip, will appear on "Fox News Sunday" at 8 a.m. to discuss President Bush's remarks in Israel, pending judicial nominations and the presidential race.

Local Democratic blogger Ted Prezelski has been selected as Arizona's Web representative at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this August.
Check out his blog at rumromanismrebellion.net for convention coverage this summer.
Now that the Dems have their bloggers, they just need a nominee.
