Seven principals in the Tucson Unified School District have received dual-school assignments.
TUSD officials hope to save about $500,000 by assigning one principal each to seven pairs of elementary schools.
Jonathan Ben-Asher, Ruben Diaz, Cricket Gallegos, Jerry Gallegos, Chris Loya, Teri Melendez and Diane Quevedo all will oversee two elementary schools each.
TUSD attempted a similar principal-sharing plan, also meant to save money, in 2005, but it was eliminated within one year because of public complaints that the principals were overworked.
Six principals are scheduled to retire at the end of the year. Between the retirements and dual-school assignments, nine more principals also will be assigned to different schools.
