3 Tucson students win prizes at science and engineering fair

Three Tucson high school students won a total of $10,000 in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair on Thursday and Friday.
Home-schooled student Parker Owan, 18, and Catalina Foothills High School students Eva Megan Nichols and Mary Xue Wang won second-place grand prize awards Friday at a ceremony in Atlanta. Nichols, 18, and Wang, 17, competed as a team.
They each won $1,500 scholarships and will each have a minor planet or asteroid named for them, a media release said.
The three students, who represented the Southern Arizona Regional Science and Engineering Fair, also won other awards on Thursday, the release said.
Nichols and Wang each won United Technologies Corp. stock valued at about $2,000, with the option of choosing $2,000 cash instead.
Owan won a $3,000 scholarship from the China Association for Science and Technology.
