A Mexican man who was deported after serving a prison sentence for sexually assaulting a woman returned to the United States illegally and was sentenced Friday to more than three years in prison.
Antonio Velazquez-Tochimani, 26, was deported to Mexico March 12, 2007, after being released from an Illinois prison, where he served time for aggravated criminal sexual assault, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona.
The conviction stemmed from an incident in which he and another person broke into a woman's bedroom, beat her and raped her at knife point.
Nearly eight months after his deportation, Velazquez-Tochimani was found near Sasabe by Border Patrol agents and taken into custody, the release said.
He pleaded guilty to illegal re-entry after deportation in January and was subsequently sentenced Friday to 46 months in federal prison.
Velazquez-Tochimani was sentenced to the maximum term allowable under a plea agreement because of the severity of his prior conviction and the fact that he was present in the United States as an unregistered sex offender, the release said.
